In an analysis of the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, geographer and professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences at UERJ, Elias Jabbour, states that the United States is consolidating a “global military dictatorship” and is trying to target the Brics with this new military action.

Jabbour has been one of the main national voices analyzing the global geopolitical scenario in recent years. For the professor, who worked at the New Development Bank (NDB), the BRICS bank, military action against Iran has a very well-defined and “savage” script.

In his understanding, this weekend’s attacks are the continuation of what Israel initiated against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip: “it was not just about expelling and decimating the Palestinian people, but also attracting the United States to Israel’s greater strategic objective, which is to destroy Iranian military power, starting with the classic way in which Israel and the United States operate, which is assassinating the leaders of their enemies. This is a savage act, but it follows a very well-defined script”, he says.

As he examines, Israel wants to build a new Middle East “in its image and likeness”. He believes that US President Donald Trump was drawn into the conflict not only by commercial interests, such as the eventual seizure of Iranian oil (the world’s third largest fossil fuel reserves).

Trump was also being blackmailed by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for having been involved with Jeffrey Epstein, a billionaire who committed suicide in prison in 2019, when he was accused of sexual abuse, pedophilia and human trafficking.

“Today, Israel, with this story involving Epstein, who was an agent of the Mossad (Israel’s spy agency), has the United States in its hand. Trump, certainly, is being highly blackmailed into doing what he did [atacar o Irã]because that’s not what he promised”, says Jabbour, pointing out Trump’s contradiction, when he promised in the election campaign that he would not get involved in new conflicts.

“Contradictory to what Trump said before returning to government, the United States has launched more than 500 attacks since he resumed office. [a presidência]. The world has been turned upside down. A head of state was kidnapped in Venezuela [Nicolás Maduro]Cuba is being exhausted by a murderous blockade. A series of conflicts have erupted around the world, both in South America and Africa, for example”, he adds.

“Global military dictatorship”

The geographer considers that, by implementing this new military action, Trump is moving towards imposing a dictatorship by force with global repercussions, which aims to attack proposals contrary to his interests.

“[É] the consolidation of a global military dictatorship by the United States. In other words, the North Americans, today, show that they are the only country capable of intervening everywhere in the world”, he examines.

Thus, part of this message from the USA, after having formed a consortium to serve Israel’s interests, now culminates in actions against the BRICS and against China, and the “tariff” has faced internal resistance.

“It is also an attempt to put the Brics in check. More than that. By attacking Iran and trying to demoralize the Iranian government with the assassination of its leader, an attempt is made to implode the Belt and Road initiative [da China] from Iran, which is one of the most strategic regions for this initiative. In this sense, we have to think very carefully, including the concept of multipolarity at this moment, because the world is upside down and the Americans are demonstrating a very great military capacity to intervene around the world”, highlights the professor.

In 2024, Iran became a member of the BRICS group. Furthermore, the Persian country plays a fundamental role in China’s Belt and Road strategy due to its strategic geographic position that connects West Asia to Central Asia; due to its great energy potential; access to the Persian Gulf; as well as the fact that Beijing and Tehran share anti-hegemonic arrangements far from Washington’s orbit.

Brazil

In addition to the reflection, but no less important, Elias warns about the possibility of American influence in the 2026 elections in Brazil.

He considers Trump’s move an indication that the global extreme right will try to prevent President Lula from being re-elected.

“We will certainly be under direct pressure from Trump and the next elections in Brazil will be under the influence of the United States. A non-military intervention will take place in the country, if it is not already taking place, to put an end to the experience of popular governments here in Brazil, which is a strategic target”, warns Jabbour, concluding his analysis with a manifestation of solidarity with the Iranian people and government.
