The Security Council of the United Nations (UN) will hold this Monday (5), starting at 12 pm (Brasília time), an extraordinary meeting to address the military offensive led by the United States against Venezuela, which resulted in the kidnapping and forced removal of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
The meeting was called by Colombia due to allegations of violations of the UN Charter, international law and Venezuelan sovereignty.
The Caracas government has already formalized protests with the organization and allies such as China and Russia have also demanded explanations from Washington.
The session takes place hours before Maduro and Cilia’s first court hearing in a federal court in New York and is expected to focus criticism on the Donald Trump government’s attempt to transfer a military operation to legal grounds, without authorization from the Security Council. The call presented by Colombia has the support of Russia and China, both permanent members of the Security Council, who have already publicly taken a stance against the operation led by Washington.
Moscow and Beijing classified the action as a serious violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty, defended the immediate release of Nicolás Maduro and his wife and stated that the issue must be dealt with within the multilateral framework of the United Nations, and not through unilateral initiatives of force.
The Brazilian government must also participate in the session, even without currently occupying a seat on the Security Council. According to Itamaraty, Brazil requested the right to speak at the extraordinary session, a prerogative provided for in UN rules for countries directly interested in the topic.
The position to be presented, according to the Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, Maria Laura da Rocha, reflects the statement released by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who condemned the United States offensive as a violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty and reaffirmed the defense of multilateralism and the rejection of the unilateral use of force.
