United States President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he is committed to “buying and possessing” the Gaza Strip, suggesting that parts of the territory could be delivered to other Middle East countries to assist in reconstruction. Trump emphasized that the US would ensure that Hamas would not return to control of the region.

The leader of the extreme right right confirmed on Monday (10) that his plan for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip does not foresee the return of the Palestinians who leave the territory destroyed by Israel in the war against Hamas.

“No, they would not come back because they will have much better dwellings. In other words, I’m talking about building a permanent place for them, ”Fox News, who had asked the right to return to Gaza, told journalist Bret Baier.

“In the meantime, I would be the owner of it. Think about it as a real estate development for the future. It would be a beautiful piece of land, no great money spent, ”said Trump.

With the statement, the American reiterates the fears between allies and rivals that his plan imposes an ethnic cleaning on Gaza, in the style defended by the ultra-right that supports the government of Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv. Rather, he had said that the removal could be temporary.

The proposal generated immediate international conviction. Neighboring countries, such as Egypt and Jordan, categorically rejected the idea of resetting Palestinians displaced in their territories. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Jordan King Abdullah II said they would not accept any plan involving the forced transfer of Palestinians to their countries.

In addition, Saudi Arabia harshly criticized the Israeli Prime Minister’s suggestion to use Saudi lands to establish a Palestinian state. In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry stated that “the Palestinian people are entitled to their land, and they are not intruders or immigrants that can be expelled whenever the brutal Israeli occupation wishes.”

The statement accused Netanyahu of trying to “divert attention” from the “crimes” in progress in Gaza.

Trump’s proposal was also criticized by human rights organizations, which classified it as a form of ethnic cleaning. Experts warn that the forced displacement of populations under occupation is illegal according to international law and may be a crime of war.

In response to criticism, Trump suggested that other Middle East countries could participate in Gaza’s reconstruction, but reiterated that the US would be committed to possessing and controlling the territory. He also mentioned the possibility of allowing some Palestinian refugees to enter the United States, considering such requests on a case by case basis.

The international community continues to closely monitor the consequences of this proposal, while Arab leaders and international organizations express concerns about their legal and humanitarian implications.
