Donald Trump’s inauguration in the United States marks a moment of great apprehension for those who defend the democratic values and sovereignty of peoples. Trump’s return to power reintroduces to the global scenario an agenda that combines nationalist selfishness, attacks on international cooperation and the advancement of neo -fascist and neo -Nazi ideas, defeated with such a sacrifice in World War II.

A setback in global health and human rights

Trump’s decision to remove the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) again symbolizes a contempt of contempt for the collective causes of humanity. This measure weakens the global capacity to combat epidemics and sanitary seizures, especially in the most vulnerable countries. In addition, the amnesty granted to scammers involved in the invasion of the capitol on January 6, 2021 represents a dangerous sign of normalization of extremism.

These attitudes not only demonstrate the uncomfortable with collective well-being, but also reinforce a power project that feeds on fear, misinformation and extreme polarization.

Impacts for Brazil and the World

Brazil will also feel the reflexes of this new US administration. Metallurgical industry and exports of agricultural machinery, fundamental to states such as Rio Grande do Sul, can be harmed with possible taxes. Even more alarming is the United States withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, weakening the global struggle against climate change, while Trump declares war on electric cars and energy transition.

Moreover, Elon Musk’s gesture during possession, with symbolisms associated with Nazism, is a warning to the rise of dangerous rhetoric and ideologies that should have been in the past.

A warning about subservience

The subservient stance of a portion of the Brazilian political elite against US initiatives is worrying. The episode of the entourage of deputies who traveled to the United States to “honor” Trump’s possession illustrates this well. With attitudes that vary between flattery and shame, these representatives reinforce an foreign policy that gives up national autonomy for others’ interests.

Brazil, historically, has stood out for a broad foreign policy, independent and guided by the pursuit of dialogue with all countries. This is a tradition that we need to preserve and strengthen. It is not acceptable that representatives of the Brazilian people bend to the requirements of any foreign power, especially a government whose agenda is clearly contrary to global interests and human dignity.

The need for resistance

We are facing a historical moment when it is essential to strengthen national sovereignty, commitment to human rights and the fight against authoritarianism. It is necessary to mobilize society to face the challenges that this new international political order imposes on us. Brazil must position itself as a protagonist in defense of peace, sustainability and social justice.

As the great communist leader João Amazonas said, “history is made by peoples who rise against injustices.” This is the time to resist fascism and reaffirm our independence and our commitment to a better world.

The fight continues!
