The Embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic in Brazil issued an official statement denouncing the terrorist attacks that hit Aleppo and other locations in northern Syria on November 27, 2024. According to the statement, the attacks were carried out by groups led by the al-Nusra Front, classified as a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council, and had the support of foreign guerrillas and advanced technology, such as drones.
The Syrian government blamed regional and international sponsors for the attacks, saying that carrying them out would be impossible without “multifaceted external support.” The note also links the events to Israel’s military actions, which Syria accuses of seeking to destabilize the region in line with a “Zionist plan to spread chaos”.
Attacks and impact on civilians
The attack aimed to take control of the city of Aleppo and part of the strategic M5 international highway. According to the statement, the actions resulted in direct threats to the civilian population, interruption of economic activities and mass displacement of residents to other areas.
In response, the Syrian Arab Army carried out operations to regain control of the affected areas, reinforcing its military presence in the region. The government reiterated its commitment to combating terrorist organizations and reestablishing State authority over the entire national territory.
International complaints and appeals
The embassy note harshly criticizes the stance of countries that allegedly support extremist groups, accusing them of violating UN Security Council resolutions and international commitments, such as the Astana agreements, which defend Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity.
Syria also called on the international community to pressure the sponsors of these terrorist groups to comply with UN resolutions on combating terrorism, in line with the UN global strategy.
Geopolitical implications
The attacks occur in a context of growing tension in the region, marked by Israeli military actions and disputes involving regional powers. The Syrian government sees the attacks as part of a coordinated effort to weaken the country’s stability and influence the balance of power in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, international organizations have not yet officially commented on the reported events. The escalation of violence in Aleppo highlights the ongoing challenges to achieving peace and stability in Syria, more than a decade after the conflict began in the country.
The embassy’s note reaffirms the Syrian government’s determination to seek international support to face the challenges posed by the presence of terrorist groups and external interference, which continue to worsen the humanitarian and political crisis in the region.
