Portuguese Communist Party condemns military aggression against Iran

Communists around the world expressed their disapproval against yet another criminal act by the United States, now in collusion with Israel, with military action against Iran, which resulted in the assassination of the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

The Portuguese Communist Party made a point of taking a stance and published a note condemning the attacks, noting NATO’s complacency and listing the list of crimes committed in the Middle East.

PCP condemns the new US and Israeli military aggression against Iran

The PCP (Portuguese Communist Party) strongly condemns the US and Israeli military aggression unleashed today against Iran, which constitutes a flagrant violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter, international law, sovereignty and the rights of the Iranian people.

The PCP emphasizes that it is the USA and Israel, with the support and complicity of their NATO allies, that are responsible for decades of violations of international law, destabilization, state terrorism and war in the Middle East, with its list of death, suffering and destruction, expressed in the occupation and colonization of Palestinian territories and the oppression of the Palestinian people, victims of Israel’s genocidal policy; in the aggression against Lebanon and Syria and the occupation of territories in these countries by Israel; in the war in Afghanistan; in the aggression and occupation of Iraq; or in the aggression against Libya and Yemen.

Underlining the seriousness of this new military aggression by the USA and Israel against Iran, the PCP holds US imperialism and its allies responsible for the serious worsening of the situation in the Middle East and its consequences.

The military aggression against Iran is part of the broader plan of North American imperialism to try to impose, by force, its hegemonic dominance over the Middle East – a region with vast energy resources –, as well as on a global level, as evidenced by its aggression against Venezuela and the increase in the blockade it imposes against Cuba.

The PCP emphasizes that the USA, just as it lied in its claim of non-existent “weapons of mass destruction” to militarily attack Iraq, is again seeking to brandish false pretexts to whitewash its aggression against Iran.

It should be remembered that Israel is the only country with nuclear weapons in the Middle East and that it refuses to ratify the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and to accept inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The PCP denounces the complicity of the PSD/CDS Government with this repeated affront to international law by the USA and Israel, by allowing the use of national territory by North American military forces – namely the Lajes Base, in the Azores – within the scope of this aggression against Iran, with the consequent involvement of Portugal.

The PCP considers that, in compliance with the principles of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, the Portuguese Government is faced with the requirement to condemn the military aggression of the USA and Israel against Iran – and not to authorize the use of the national territory to carry it out –, as well as the criminal warmongering policy that they carry out in the Middle East, which includes the genocide of the Palestinian people, demanding its immediate end.

Denouncing those who encourage and bet on the escalation of confrontation and war at the international level and aware of the serious dangers and serious consequences that this entails for the people, the PCP calls on democrats and patriots, defenders of peace, to express their protest and indignation and continue and expand the fight for Peace and solidarity with the Palestinian people, with the Iranian people and other peoples victims of imperialist aggression in the Middle East and throughout the world.
