The United States acts in an opportunistic and dangerous manner by promoting external interference in Iran, with military threats, support for destabilizing groups and maintenance of economic sanctions that deepen the crisis in the country. The assessment was made by Ana Prestes, Secretary of International Relations at PCdoB, when commenting on the recent escalation of tensions involving Washington and Tehran.

“The United States is acting in an absolutely opportunistic and interested way to promote a movement of external interference over Iran with military threats, with the supply of weapons and equipment to groups that intend to destabilize the internal situation in Iran and the most serious are the threats of military attack”, he stated to Red Portal. According to Ana, the scenario becomes even more worrying given the recent history of direct actions by the USA against the Persian country. “We already had an attack on Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities in 2025 and now they are making threats of a new military attack that no one knows exactly what it is like, what it will be like.”

The PCdoB leader recalled that North American policy towards Iran is not new and includes assassinations and support for military actions by strategic allies in the Middle East. “The United States has a history of attacking Iran with Iranian leaders, such as Qasem Soleimani in 2020, and also supporting Israel in the execution of leaders of Iran’s revolutionary guard,” he highlighted. For her, the arguments used by Washington are not sustainable. “The United States is looking at its own interests, not as concerned about democracy or improving the economy, not even about women’s rights in Iran, as they claim.”

In Ana Prestes’ assessment, the speech in defense of democracy serves, in practice, to justify the economic blockade and international siege. “They use all these arguments to maintain economic sanctions, the economic embargo they have on Iran and now a concrete military threat,” he said.

Regarding the Iranian government’s decision to take the case to the United Nations (UN), Ana considers the movement natural, but makes a critical reading of the international organization’s ability to respond. “Iran, it took the issue to the UN and it is natural, but today the international community is very discredited as to how the UN can react to this type of situation, especially after the entire genocide in Gaza, which the UN did little, little was able to do to stop.”

The PCdoB Secretary of International Relations also related the situation in Iran to the historical experience of Latin America in the face of United States foreign policy. For her, the possible path involves solidarity between people. “About Latin America and what can be done is solidarity with the Iranian people,” he stated, remembering that Tehran has already shown support for countries in the region. “The Iranian government is one of the governments that supported the most in the last period, when, for example, Venezuela was in great difficulty.”

According to Ana, this identification comes from a common reading of imperialism. “There is a great feeling of solidarity in the sense of being targeted by the United States, just as we, in Latin America, have also been targeted by the United States, an anti-imperialist solidarity.” She emphasizes, however, that this position does not mean automatic agreement with Iranian internal policy. “Of course, anti-imperialist solidarity does not necessarily imply support for internal Iranian issues, which many people disagree with.”

For Ana Prestes, the central point is the recognition that the country suffers systematic external attacks. “Many people agree that it is a country that is being attacked and that its economy is weakened precisely by the blockades and sanctions from the United States. So, we can identify a lot there”, he concluded.
