NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte threatened on Tuesday (15) to apply 100% secondary sanctions against Brazil, China and India if they maintain trade relations with Russia.

The measure, without legal basis, seeks to press these countries to break with Moscow and force President Vladimir Putin to accept a peace agreement with Ukraine in the molds required by the United States and his allies.

“If this guy in Moscow [Putin] Not taking negotiations seriously, this will turn against Brazil, India and China massively, ”Rutte said openly threatening.

The statement was made during a meeting with US senators, shortly after Rutte meets US President Donald Trump. The head of the Military Alliance said that countries that continue to buy oil and Russian gas – sometimes reselling with profit, as he pointed out – will be punished with commercial sanctions if Putin does not accept western requirements within 50 days.

“Please call the president of Russia and tell him that he needs to take peace negotiations seriously,” Rutte insisted, directing himself directly to the leaders of the three countries. “Perhaps they want to analyze this because it can be very harmful.”

Rutte repeats Trump threats and adopts hard line against the global south

The statements of NATO Secretary-General occurred one day after President Donald Trump announced on Monday (14), massive sending of weapons to Ukraine, with ammunition and missiles paid by European countries.

According to Rutte, the delivery includes both air defense systems and offensive weapons. The new phase of the War, driven by the US, would be accompanied by sanctions “secondary” to Global Southern countries as a way to coerce them to abandon their neutrality and break economic relations with Russia.

Although Trump has not directly quoted the BRICS countries, Republican senators, and Democrats already articulate a bill to apply up to 500% rates to nations that maintain Moscow business relations.

“We will continue to press the approval of the sanction project against Russia, with even tougher penalties for determining India, China, Brazil and others to feed Putin’s war machine,” said Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, in a message published on Rede X.

The period of 50 days to the end of the war has generated distrust even among conservative parliamentarians. Republican Senator Thom Tillis warned that Putin could use the period to gain military ground and negotiate in a more favorable position if pressure failed.

Beijing reacts: “Tariff coercion and war are nowhere

The Chinese government was the first to react firmly to threats. The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian, rejected unilateral sanctions and defended the diplomatic way as the only solution to the crisis. “Tariff wars have no winners.

Coercion and pressure will not take anywhere, ”he said at a news conference on Wednesday.

He also countered statements from Trump’s nominee for the UN, Mike Waltz, who promised to “contain the Chinese influence” on the multilateral system: “These lines reflect a cold and zero-summed mindset,” said the spokesman, using common expression to designate a logic in which one country’s gain can only occur at the expense of the other.

Loss of autonomy

The tone adopted by Rutte, former Holland’s puzzle, has drawn attention for absolute adhesion to Trump’s agenda. During another recent episode, commenting on the alignment of the bloc’s countries with the US regarding the attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, the current NATO head was referred to Trump as daddy – Informal term in English which means “daddy”, used in this context as an expression of submission.

The speech, given in a tone of flattery, generated embarrassment among European allies and was interpreted as a symbol of the loss of autonomy of the Atlantic alliance since Trump’s return to the White House. Instead of representing a balance between member countries, NATO behaves today as an instrument of coercion of US foreign policy, directly aiming at BRICS countries and sabotaging the construction of a multipolar world.
