On the eve of the first debate between the candidates for the presidency of the United States for this year’s elections, a survey published this Sunday (8) by the New York Times/Siena College shows that the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and the Republican Donald Trump remain tied.
According to the poll, the Republican has 48% of the vote, against 47% for the Democrat, a technical tie within the margin of error of three percentage points. The result is practically the same as a poll conducted at the end of July, shortly after US President Joe Biden gave up his bid for reelection.
While Trump’s campaign has had a tough time in the weeks since Democratic President Joe Biden dropped out of the race in July, recent polls indicate that his core support base will not abandon him.
The poll showed that voters feel they need to learn more about Harris, even though their views on Trump are largely set. In the survey, 28% of likely voters said they needed more information about the Democratic candidate, while just 9% said the same about Trump.
The poll indicates that Tuesday’s (10) presidential debate could be a crucial moment. On that day, the candidates will face each other for the first time in their lives in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania).
Kamala has been in a hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, since Thursday to prepare for the debate. Trump has increased his public appearances in recent days. The 90-minute program, which will air on ABC starting at 9 p.m. (10 p.m. ET), could be the only debate between the two. So far, there are no other debates scheduled until the November 5 election.
