Ingredients

  • Meatballs
  • 500g of ground meat (can be beef, pork, chicken or a mixture)

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup of milk

  • 1 egg

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 can of peeled tomatoes (400g)

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Fresh basil leaves to garnish

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, chopped garlic, parsley, salt and pepper.
Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
  • With slightly damp hands, form small meatballs from the meat mixture.
You can make any size you prefer, but something around 2-3 cm in diameter is a good measure.
  • Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat.
Add the meatballs and cook them for a few minutes, turning them gently to brown on all sides.
Remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
  • In the same pan, add the chopped onion and chopped garlic.
Sauté until soft and lightly golden.
  • Add the peeled tomatoes to the pan, crushing them with a spoon.
Add the tomato paste, meat (or vegetable) broth and sugar.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Put the meatballs back in the pan with the sauce and let it cook over low heat for about 20-30 minutes, so that the meatballs cook completely and the sauce sets.
  • Remove from the heat and serve the meatballs in the sauce with fresh basil leaves to decorate.
You can accompany them with rice, pasta or bread, according to your preference.
