Prison context
The kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro occurred on January 3, 2026, during a United States military invasion of Caracas that included bombings. The president was kidnapped along with his wife, Cilia Flores and both were taken to New York, under accusations of narco-terrorism in North American justice, despite Trump declaring that the interest is in Venezuelan oil.
After the operation, vice-president Delcy Rodríguez temporarily assumed the presidency, with the support of the Armed Forces and the Supreme Court. Nicolás Maduro Guerra is also among those accused in New York.
