In addition to the opening speech of the 80th UN General Assembly next Tuesday (23), in New York, the United States, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will participate in parallel events involving debates on the strengthening of democracy, combating the effects of climate change, defense of multilateralism and the issue of Palestine.

On the same day of the speech, the participation is on the agenda, together with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, of the high level event on climate action, aimed at boosting international mobilization and stimulating the presentation of new nationally determined contributions (NDCs) towards COP30.

“Among the highlights is the presentation of the Forest Forests Forever forever (TFFF), a Brazilian initiative that proposes an innovative model of financing for the conservation of tropical forests. The fund will be officially launched during COP30, scheduled for November, in Belém (PA),” says government note.

On Monday (22), Lula will participate in the second session of the International High Level Conference for the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the solution of two states, convened by France and Saudi Arabia.

“Brazil expects the conference to serve as an opportunity for more states to recognize the Palestinian state, joining the more than 147 countries that have already done so,” said the director of the Department of International Organisms of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Marotta Viegas.

According to him, from the Brazilian perspective, “sustainable peace can only be achieved in the region if both parties can negotiate on equal terms, which includes the state capacity of Palestine.”

On Wednesday (24), the Brazilian President, along with Chilean President Gabriel Boric, and Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez, will co-represent the second edition of the event “In Defense of Democracy”.

The goal is to bring together leaders from all regions of the world to strengthen multilateralism, law and cooperation against extremism, misinformation, hatred discourse and weakening of democratic institutions.

“The goal is to advance active democratic diplomacy that promotes international cooperation against the deterioration of institutions, misinformation, hatred discourse and growing social inequality,” explains Marcelo Viegas.
