President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called on world leaders not to remain silent in the face of the “endless massacre” in the Gaza Strip. Last Saturday (13), the Israeli army bombed a humanitarian zone in Khan Younis, leaving at least 90 dead and almost 300 injured.

“We, the political leaders of the democratic world, cannot remain silent in the face of this endless massacre,” the president posted on social media. Photos and videos verified by the Sanad agency of the Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera showed Palestinians searching through rubble and tents in search of survivors.

“It is appalling that they continue to collectively punish the Palestinian people. Tens of thousands have already died in successive attacks since last year, many of them in delimited humanitarian zones that should be protected,” protested Lula.

In a statement, the Israeli army said the attack was carried out with precision weapons to target a Hamas military commander. This Sunday (14), however, the group said the target, Mohammed Deif, is alive and well.

The bombing prompted the Palestinian fundamentalist group to temporarily abandon negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“It is appalling that they continue to collectively punish the Palestinian people. Tens of thousands have already died in successive attacks since last year, many of them in delimited humanitarian zones that should be protected,” said Lula.

On the same day, another Israeli attack left at least 17 Palestinians dead in an attack on a prayer hall in the West Zone of Gaza. Estimates indicate that since the beginning of the Israeli offensive, more than 38,000 Palestinians, the vast majority of them civilians, have lost their lives and 2.3 million have been expelled from their homes.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health says that more than 70% of the dead are women and children — with an estimated 40% of the dead being children.
