President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, believe that by the end of the year the Mercosur European union agreement is signed. In a 20-minute telephone conversation on Friday (5), the two leaders talked about relations between Brazil and the European bloc.

According to Itamaraty, President Lula greeted the shipping document for approval by the European Council as another important step for his signature.

“In this sense, it expressed the expectation that the agreement can be signed later this year, during the Mercosur summit in Brazil,” says the statement.

Lula also argued that any regulation on safeguards that is adopted internally by the EU is in full compliance with the spirit and the terms agreed in the agreement.

“Both have agreed that, given the moment of uncertainty and disruption of international trade, the partnership between the two regional blocks is even more strategic. The future agreement will create a market of over 700 million people and correspond to 26% of global GDP,” he says a note.

Lula and President Von Der Leyen also reiterated their commitment to multilateralism and a more just and peaceful international order.

“In line with the commitment of Brazil and the European Union to the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the confrontation of the severe climate crisis that affects the planet, the two leaders reinforced their commitment to ambitious dearbonization goals. President Lula reaffirmed that COP30 will be the COP of Truth, when world leaders will be able to refute negotiations and present concrete transition commitments to a green economy,” says the Itamaraty note.

President Von Der Leyen reiterated her support and that of the European Union to hold COP30 in Belém.
