One day after the meeting between the presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the president of the United States, Donald Trump, on Sunday (26), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the heads of state praised the meeting. The repercussion was equally positive on the market with the dollar falling and the Brazilian stock market at an all-time high.
“Soon, there will soon be no problem between the United States and Brazil. What matters at a negotiating table is the future, it’s what you are going to negotiate going forward. We don’t want confusion, we want negotiation. We don’t want delay, we want results,” Lula told journalists.
The president highlighted the mutual respect maintained in the conversations. “I made a point of telling President Trump that the fact that we have different ideological positions does not prevent two heads of state from treating the relationship with great respect. I respect him because he was elected president of the United States by the democratic vote of the American people and he respects me because I was elected by the democratic vote of the Brazilian people. With that on the table, everything becomes easier”, he explains.

“I return to Brazil satisfied with the meeting I had with President Trump. If it depends on him and me, we will have an agreement. We are willing to ensure that Brazil and the United States continue with the relationship that we have cultivated for 201 years”, he says.
The Brazilian president claims that he gave the American a solid argument, which “clearly shows the error of the argument that the trade balance” between the United States and Brazil was in deficit.
“I made a point of telling him that the information that the United States had a trade deficit with Brazil was unfounded. We proved that there was a surplus of 410 billion dollars in 15 years. Last year alone there was almost a 22 billion dollar surplus for the United States. In the entire G20 there are only three countries in which the United States has a surplus: Brazil, the United Kingdom and Australia”, he said.
Lula also said that a new meeting could be scheduled. “He told me that he wants to go to Brazil, I said that I am willing to go to Washington, because if there is one thing I have learned to do in life, it is negotiation. Let’s go to square one and return to the following: where do we want to get to? If President Trump is willing, as he said he has to make a good agreement with Brazil, we have every intention of making a good agreement, there will be no problem for the relationship between the two largest democracies in the West”, he says.

In Trump’s assessment, it was a “great meeting”. “We had a good meeting. Let’s see what happens. I don’t know if anything will happen, but we’ll see. They would like to close a deal. Let’s see. Right now, they are paying, I think, 50% of the tariff. But we had a great meeting,” he told journalists aboard the Air Force One presidential plane.
The North American president also congratulated the Brazilian on his 80th birthday this Monday (27). “I want to wish the president a happy birthday. Today is his birthday. Did you know? He’s a very vigorous guy, actually, and I was very impressed. But today is his birthday. So, happy birthday,” he said.
The meeting between the two presidents has had repercussions among the Brazilian business community, which expects concrete results. In other words, the dialogue paved the way for reducing tariffs imposed on Brazilian products.
In the market, the repercussion was positive in the morning. The dollar fell 0.18% this Monday and was quoted at R$5.3823. Ibovespa renewed its historic high reaching 147,977.
