President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused Israel of promoting an extermination against Palestinians and trying to annihilate the dream of a state of their own, in a speech on Monday (22) at the conference on the Palestine convened by France and Saudi Arabia on the banks of the UN General Assembly.

“What is happening in Gaza is not only the extermination of the Palestinian people, but an attempted annihilation of their nation dream. Both Israel and Palestine have the right to exist,” he said in a speech that he has placed war as a symbol of the failure of multilateralism and the blockade imposed by veto power in the Security Council.

Lula stated that “the tyranny of the veto sabota the very reason for being the UN”, noting that 78 years ago the Brazilian Oswaldo Aranha presided over the session that approved the sharing plan.

“At that time, the perspective of two states was born, but only one materialized,” he said.

For the president, the basis of any state – territory, population and government – has been systematically undermined in the Palestinian case.

“How to talk about territory in the face of an illegal occupation that grows with each new settlement? How to maintain a population in the face of ethnic cleaning we watch in real time? And how to build a government without empowering the Palestinian authority?” He asked.

Supported by a report by the UN Inquiry Commission, Lula called the offensive in Gaza as genocide and announced that Brazil joined the process filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

“The terrorist acts committed by Hamas are unacceptable, and Brazil was emphatic in condemning them. But the right of defense does not authorize the indiscriminate killing of civilians,” he said.

“Nothing justifies lifelong or mutilating more than 50,000 children. Nothing justifies destroying 90% of Palestinian homes. Nothing justifies to use hunger as a weapon of war, nor to lick hungry people in search of help,” he protested.

The president cited UN numbers about food insecurity and said that “more than half a million Palestinians do not have enough food, more than the population of Miami or Tel Aviv.”

According to him, hunger “does not afflict the body only; it shatters the soul.” The agent accused Israel of trying to eliminate not only a population, but the right to self -determination.

Reaffirmed that the realization of the Palestinian State is necessary to correct the asymmetry that blocks the dialogue and argued that the General Assembly creates an agency inspired by the committee that contributed to the end of apartheid in South Africa.

Brazil, he added, will reinforce control over imports of illegal settlement products in the West Bank and will remain suspended exports of defense material, including dual use, which can serve crimes against humanity and genocide.

The speech was given in a conference marked by a wave of formal recognition of Palestine.

France, Monaco, Luxembourg, Malta and Belgium announced the decision in plenary, adding to the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal, who had made the gesture on Sunday.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that “today, France recognizes the state of Palestine” and was cheered by the Palestinian delegation. Before the conference began, Macron and President Lula greeted themselves with an effusive hug, a gesture that symbolized the tune between the two leaders in defending the solution of two states.

The approval of the so -called New York Declaration, with 142 votes in favor, sealed the meeting with the promise of “tangible steps, defined and irreversible” for the creation of a Palestinian state.

Saudi Chancellor Faisal Bin Farhan, the conference of the conference, denounced “brutal crimes” of Israeli occupation in Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem and said that the two -state solution is the only way to permanent peace.

Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that “recognition is a right of Palestine, not a reward”, while the president of the general assembly, Annalena Baerbock, stressed that the resolution expresses one of the broadest votes ever registered in support of the Palestinian cause.

Other leaders echoed Lula’s complaint. Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdoğan evoked the Holocaust to accuse Genocide Netanyahu. The Egyptian Mostafa Madbouly called the solution of two “security imperative” states and South African Cyril Ramaphosa recalled his country’s action against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

The Spanish Pedro Sánchez warned that “it is urgent that there is a Palestinian people in the state we claim to recognize” and said that “the Palestinian people are being annihilated.”

Israel and the United States boycotted the conference and maintained empty chairs in the plenary. Israeli ambassador Danny Danon classified the meeting as a “circus,” while the White House stated that recognition would be a “gift to Hamas.”
