The Arab League rejected, on Wednesday (12), the proposal of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to move the Palestinian population from the Gaza Strip to other countries in the Middle East. The plan, classified as “unacceptable” by the bloc, has been the target of the last opposition of leaders from the region and allied countries.
The Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abul Gheit, warned of the negative impact of the proposal during the world summit of governments in Dubai. According to him, Trump’s idea “empty Palestine from its historical population” compromises the stability of the region and paves the way for a new cycle of violence in the Middle East. “Today, the focus is on Gaza, but tomorrow will be in West Bank. This is an attempt to dismantle the historical law of Palestinians to their territory, ”he said.
Trump’s proposal predicts that Palestinians be relocated to countries such as Egypt and Jordan, which was immediately rejected by the governments of these countries. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has expressed concern for national security and emphasized that he will not accept the massive entry of Palestinian refugees. Jordan, which already houses a large Palestinian population, also rejected the possibility, classifying the proposal as a threat to their sovereignty and stability.
Trump’s plan also generated negative reactions from other countries and international entities. China, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that “Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and is an integral part of Palestinian territory”, condemning any forced displacement of the local population.
French President Emmanuel Macron classified the proposal as a “real estate operation” and criticized the unilateral approach of the US government.
Egypt has announced that it will host an Arab League emergency summit on February 27 to discuss the unfolding of the proposal and seek a coordinated response to the challenges imposed on the Palestinian people. The meeting must be attended by regional leaders and UN representatives.
Trump presented his proposal last week during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. The Republican suggested that the United States take control of the Gaza Strip and transform the territory into a “Middle East Riviera.” Since then, the plan has been widely condemned by governments around the world.
The political context of the proposal occurs amid growing tensions between Israel and Hamas, while a fragile ceasefire tries to be kept in the region. The US government has pressured the Palestinian group to deliver more Israeli hostages as a condition for the maintenance of the truce. At the same time, Israel threatens to resume the massacre if the terms of the agreement are not met.
The displacement proposal also generates concern among the Palestinians. Many inhabitants of Gaza have manifested themselves against the idea of resettlement, reinforcing their commitment to remain in their homeland. “I prefer to eat rubble to be forced to leave Gaza,” said a local resident.
The firm position of the Arab League and other international leaders indicates that Trump’s proposal will hardly find support in the international community. Meanwhile, the future of the Gaza Strip is uncertain, with the tension between the actors of the conflict increasing and the prospect of an increasingly distant peaceful solution.
