O King Charles 3rd and Queen Camilla Parker Bowles were crowned this Saturday (May 6, 2023) in a ceremony held at Westminster Abbey, in London (UK). Officially, there are 3 days of celebration throughout the United Kingdom. From May 6th to 8th, the royal family will host celebration events.
Before the coronation, King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended the traditional “King’s Procession”. This part corresponds to the route that was taken from the Buckingham Palace (official residence of the monarch in London) to Westminster Abbey, the church that has received coronations since 1066.
The coronation ceremony was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The king was crowned on St Edward’s Chair, made in 1300 for Edward 1st and used at every coronation since that year. During the ceremony, the crown of Saint Edward, made in 1661, was placed on the head of Charles III. It weighs about 2.2 kg and is made of solid gold.

Then Camilla received the crown that Queen Mary received at her coronation. It is the first time since the 18th century that a consort’s crown has been reused. Added diamonds from Elizabeth II’s personal jewelry collection.
In addition to members of the royal family, heads of state such as Emmanuel Macron (France) were present. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) also attended the coronation. Also attending the ceremony were US First Lady Jill Biden, former UK Prime Ministers and current British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
After being crowned, Charles 3rd, Camilla and other members of the royal family went to “Coronation Procession”which marks the return to Buckingham Palace.
