US presidential candidate Kamala Harris closed the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Thursday (22) with an optimistic and enthusiastic speech, but without explaining her proposals. The Democratic candidate for US President sought to boost the wave of enthusiasm that has infected the party’s base since President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from seeking re-election.
The Democrat made repeated gestures to the Republican and independent electorate, calling for national unity, unlike Trump, who adopted a harsher tone in defense of far-right proposals.
Kamala spoke for just 37 minutes, compared to Trump’s 90 minutes at the Republican convention. She used the speech almost as an introduction to the American electorate. She initially spoke about her personal story, her career as a prosecutor in California.
The current vice president tried to sell an inspiring story of success, of the American dream of a daughter of immigrants, highlighting her middle-class background and seeking to show moderation.
“On behalf of Americans like the people I grew up with, people who work hard, pursue their dreams, and look out for each other. On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth, I accept your nomination for President of the United States,” said Kamala Harris.
In her speech, Kamala was very critical of the Republican candidate, mentioning him 15 times. She said that he is not a serious person, but that the consequences of putting him back in the White House would be very serious, and she also accused him of wanting to take the country back to the past.
“Imagine Donald Trump without barriers, and how he would use the immense powers of the Presidency of the United States. Not to improve his life, not to strengthen our national security, but to serve the only client he has ever had: himself,” Kamala said.
“In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man. But the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious,” he continued.
The day before, Tim Walz, in a short but effective speech, managed to present himself as a family man, as a teacher who was well-liked by his students, and as a governor who never forgot his roots in rural Nebraska. Kamala did something similar.
“I want you to know that I promise to be a president for all Americans. You can always count on me to put country above party and above self. To uphold America’s sacred founding principles, from the rule of law to free and fair elections to the peaceful transfer of power,” Kamala said, offering a counterpoint to Donald Trump.
