The Republican and Democratic campaigns for the November US presidential race have agreed to hold a debate between the vice presidential candidates on CBS News on October 1.
The clash will pit Ohio Senator JD Vance, 40, chosen by Donald Trump, 78, against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, 60, nominated by Kamala Harris, 59.
The vice-presidents on the respective tickets represent the white middle class of the American Midwest, one of the main stages of the presidential race and which should be decisive for the outcome of the elections.
The channel presented the two campaigns with four date options for the event: September 17, September 24, October 1 and October 8.
On social media, Tim Waltz confirmed his presence and responded to a CBS News post that said he had invited both vice presidential candidates to participate in a debate in New York City. “See you October 1st, JD,” Walz responded, in a provocation to Vance.
The Harris-Walz campaign subsequently stated that “Harris for President has accepted CBS’ invitation to a Vice Presidential Debate on October 1st. Governor Walz looks forward to debating JD Vance – if he shows up.”
In response, Vance posted on Thursday (15) that he accepted the CBS News debate on October 1 and said he also wanted to debate on CNN on September 18.
“The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has already challenged Kamala to three of them,” Vance wrote on X, in response to Waltz. “Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I accept the CNN debate on September 18th as well, and I look forward to seeing you at both!”
