Israel intensified his offensive against the city of Gaza over the weekend, killing at least 45 people and destroying residential buildings, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security office was preparing to discuss the town.
The region concentrates about one million of more than two million inhabitants of the enclave, which turns any offensive into a direct risk to the hunger, lack of medicines and shelters. Nevertheless, Netanyahu described the city as “last bastion of Hamas.”
Local health authorities reported that 30 people alone were killed, including 13 who were trying to collect food near a help point at the center of the Enclave, and two in a house in the city of Gaza.
In another attack on Saturday (30), 15 people were killed in a residential building, including five children.
The attacks focus on populous neighborhoods, such as Sheikh Radwan, where residents reported that Israeli tanks and combat planes bombed the region continually throughout Saturday and Sunday, forcing families to leave their homes and seek refuge in the western part of Gaza.
“They are advancing to the heart of the city where hundreds of thousands are sheltered from the east, north and south, while bombarding these areas of air and earth to scare people to leave the place,” Rezik Salah, father of two children, told the father of two children Reuters.
Military climbing was accompanied by even more severe restrictions on humanitarian aid entry. On Friday (29), Israel ended the temporary breaks that allowed the delivery of supplies, declaring the city of Gaza as a “dangerous combat zone”.
The measure expanded the scarcity of food, medicines and shelters, deepening the crisis experienced by a population already exhausted by war.
The International Red Cross Committee warned of the devastating impact of a possible mass evacuation in the city of Gaza, which concentrates about half of the Enclave population, more than 1 million people.
“An evacuation of the city would cause a massive population displacement that no other area of the enclave would be able to absorb, given the scarcity of food, shelter and medical supplies,” said organization president Mirjana Spoljaric.
Families report the impossibility of finding shelter in other locations. “People who have relatives in the south have been to them. Others, including me, found no space, as Deir Al-Balah and Mawasi are overcrowded,” said Ghada, mother of five children, resident of the Sabra neighborhood.
The intensification of attacks further aggravates the humanitarian situation in a region that already accumulates a devastating balance. Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip has killed more than 63,000 people, according to local health authorities, mostly civilians.
Much of the territory remains in ruins, without minimal infrastructure to meet the needs of the population.
The Israeli Military Plan
The Israeli government states that the offensive against the city of Gaza will not start immediately. According to military authorities, a large -scale operation “should not start in the coming weeks,” as the priority would be to evacuate civilians before moving on with new land troops.
Nevertheless, Netanyahu’s security office gathered on Sunday to discuss the next stages of town taking. He has returned to defend the operation as necessary by stating that the city of Gaza represents the “last bastion of Hamas.”
The prime minister has insisted that the offensive has a decisive character against the Palestinian group, even in the face of the massive concentration of civilians and the humanitarian crisis.
Within Israel, military strategy also generates tension. The army itself warned political leaders that the operation can endanger hostages still kept in Gaza. Twenty of the 48 hostages that remain in captivity are considered alive.
The warning occurs when protests intensify in Israeli cities, with protesters demanding the end of the war and the immediate release of the kidnapped.
Internal contradictions expose failures in strategy
While the security office discusses the next steps of the offensive to take the city of Gaza, the perception that Israel does not have a clear strategy or the ability to support such a dimension operation.
A document from Israel’s own defense forces (FDI), revealed by the local press, concluded that the last major military campaign against Enclave – the so -called “Gideon Carriage” operation, held between May and August – failed to achieve its central objectives.
The report, distributed between army brigades, states categorically that “Israel made every possible mistake” by conducting the offensive.
The internal text lists a series of strategic failures: action contrary to military doctrine, incompetence in the distribution of humanitarian aid, slow maneuvering in the field and prioritization to avoid military lows over the announced goals.
Humanitarian aid management, according to the army itself, made room for Hamas to denounce Israel internationally for provoking hunger in Gaza, expanding the country’s wear abroad.
The document adds that the pressure exerted by the military campaign sold out the troops, caused a lack of personnel, equipment wear and exposed the poor preparation for a guerrilla war.
Officers who had access to the report expressed concern about the next step, doubting that the necessary lessons were learned in time from the planned offensive against the city of Gaza.
The assessment contrasts with public statements by military authorities, who insist on portraying the previous operation as a victory.
The internal divergence shows that even after almost two years of war, Israel failed to fulfill their own military goals, while the Palestinian population remains bombing, hunger and forced displacements.
In response to the revelations, the FDI denied that the document reflects the official position of the command and claimed that the operation “Gideon Carriage” has achieved the expected goals. They also stated that the circulation of the report was made “without authorization from the competent authorities” and that the case is under investigation.
