Two days after the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army launched a military operation in Jenin, northern West Bank, which left at least ten Palestinians killed and dozens of injuries. The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the action as part of an effort to “eradicate terrorism” in the region, which includes often targets of Israeli military forays.
According to Israel’s security office, the offensive – called the “Iron Wall” – mobilized Army troops, police and security agency Shin Bet. During the action, strong shots were recorded, involving Palestinian combatants of the Islamic Jihad, as well as reports of killed and injured civilians.
The growing red Palestinian organization denounced restrictions imposed by Israeli troops, who would have prevented help teams from serving injured.
Jenin operation occurs at an internal pressure on Netanyahu’s government coalition. Ultra-Orthodox far right parties, such as the one led by Bezalel Smotrich, had been criticizing the decision to consolidate the ceasefire in Gaza, agreed with international mediation.
The truce provided for the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, but was seen as a concession by ultranationalist sectors. Disclaimer resulted in the departure of important coalition figures, weakening the government.
Tension is also reflected in the increase in violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, widely denounced by international organizations. Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, settlements of settlers against Palestinians, often under the protection of the Israeli army, have intensified. On the eve of the offensive in Jenin, at least 21 Palestinians were injured in settlements of settlers, followed by clashes that also involved Israeli soldiers.
In the international level, the Jenin operation coincides with Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency, marking a more aligned stance to the Israeli government. Trump revoked sanctions imposed by the Biden administration to extremist Israeli settlers, which was interpreted as a stimulus to the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank.
The measure was celebrated by figures of the Israeli far right, such as Smotrich, who openly defends the annexation of parts of the occupied territory.
The West Bank region, occupied by Israel since 1967, is the scene of growing violence. Since the beginning of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, at least 847 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank for Israeli Army actions or settlements of settlers, according to data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The increase in tensions has generated concern in international organizations, which call for greater containment of Israeli forces and resumption of negotiations by a peaceful solution.
Despite the ceasefire in Gaza, the developments in the West Bank indicate a climb of the conflict, with serious implications for the Palestinian civilian population and the stability of the region. Observers point out that recent measures of the Netanyahu government can deepen Israel’s isolation on the international scenario and make it difficult to search for a negotiated solution to the conflict.
