The Israeli army on Tuesday (9) held an air strike in Doha, the capital of Qatar, against Hamas leaders, in an unprecedented action that raises the conflict in the Middle East to a new level.

Explosions were recorded in residential areas of the city, where members of the Palestinian group delegation would be gathered in negotiations on the proposal of ceasefire presented by the United States.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said the “criminal” attack represents “a flagrant violation of all international laws and standards and a serious threat to the security of citizens and residents of Qatar.”

In a statement, the government said it will not tolerate “this reckless behavior of Israel and its continuous manipulation of regional security,” adding that investigations are underway at the highest level.

The offensive must directly compromise diplomatic efforts to end the war in Gaza, which has extended for almost two years.

Sources linked to Hamas said to the network Al Jazera that the delegation was gathered to evaluate the latest American proposal when it was hit. Saudi broadcaster Al-Arabiya reported that initial information points to the death of Khalil Al-Hayya, head of the group’s negotiation team.

The offensive was confirmed by Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF), who classified her as a “targeted attack” against Hamas’s high summit.

According to the military statement, the targeted leaders “commanded for years the activities of the terrorist organization, are directly responsible for the massacre of 7 October and the war against the State of Israel.”

Israeli authorities also said that measures were taken to minimize the impact on civilian weapons, but there was no disclosure of numbers of dead or injured.

Qatar, which houses the largest American military base in the region and has acted as a central mediator between Hamas and Israel, has reacted hard.

In May, Israel’s Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, had promised he would be murdered.

The attack occurs less than two weeks after the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Israel, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, promised to reach Hamas leaders “wherever they are.”

For regional analysts, the action in Doha echoes the murder of political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, and symbolizes the expansion of a strategy that goes beyond national borders.

Al Jazeera correspondents stressed that Israel finds themselves “encouraged” for being able to advance their offensive in Gaza, accused of genocide by different countries and organisms, without undergoing proportional international punishments.

In addition to Gaza, Israel maintains frequent attacks on Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and occupied Westrost, expanding the risk of conflict regionalization.

Upon reaching Doha, a country considered so far safe and central to the ceasefire negotiations, Tel Aviv broke a diplomatic taboo and exposed the fragility of one of the few dialogue channels still existing among the war parts.
