The war in the Middle East saw an intensification of hostilities this Sunday (25). The Israeli government bombed southern Lebanon. The offensive used more than a hundred fighter jets to hit Hezbollah bases.

The controversial attack was justified by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government as a preemptive measure, as the group was imminent in launching rockets at Israeli territory. At least three deaths were recorded, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

This is yet another episode promoted by Israel that worsens the war and deliberately distances all efforts for peace – contrary to what they are trying to sell to the world.

Hezbollah then began the attacks, which were expected to total 320 rockets on 11 military targets, according to reports. The group said it was in response to the killing of commander Fuad Shukr and other civilians in July.

This would be the first phase of attacks in response to Shukr’s death. According to the group’s leaders, the Israeli offensive did not hamper their plans for a retaliation.

The Israeli military confirmed that some of the rockets and drones were intercepted by the Iron Dome. No fatalities were reported. As a result, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared a state of emergency for 48 hours.

Concern at the UN

The worsening crisis has led UN Secretary-General António Guterres to express concern: “they put the Lebanese and Israeli populations at risk, in addition to threatening regional security and stability.”

In a statement, he calls for an immediate reduction in hostilities, with the parties renouncing combat and respect for resolution 1701 of the entity’s Security Council.

According to the UN, “Resolution 1701 calls for respect for the Blue Line (Israeli-Lebanese border), the disarmament of all militias in Lebanon and an end to arms smuggling in the region.” It was created with the purpose of bringing a resolution to the 2006 Lebanon War.

The attacks are a reflection of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

According to the UN, 80% of the buildings in Gaza have been destroyed by Israel, more than 207 staff of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) have been killed, humanitarian zones in the enclave have been reduced to just 11% of the territory and the total number of Palestinians killed exceeds 40,000 people.
