The most abject face of US imperialism took on the form of mockery and disrespect for international law this week. In a gesture that mixes colonial arrogance and media spectacle, President Donald Trump used his social network, Truth Socialto gloat over the current political and humanitarian tragedy imposed on Venezuela.
Trump shared a montage that imitates the layout of the virtual encyclopedia Wikipedia, presenting him as “interim president of Venezuela, acting, January 2026”. In the propaganda piece, the position of ruler of the South American country appears above his role as head of the White House, signaling that, for the current North American administration, he has contempt for Venezuela’s sovereignty and the rules of democracy.
Intervention as entertainment
The gesture is not just a social media “joke”, but a planned mockery. Its function, by provoking rejection on social media, is to increase the exposure of the post itself. The publication was made just one week after the military invasion of Caracas by US troops, which resulted in the deposition and kidnapping of elected president Nicolás Maduro and former first lady Cilia Flores. Both were taken to a New York prison under the pretext of “narcoterrorism” charges — a script repeated by Washington to justify surgical interventions and coups d’Ă©tat.
While the international community watches with apprehension the explicit US tutelage over Venezuela, Trump turns the violence of the occupation into mockery to entertain the electoral base. The president has released images of Maduro as a war trophy aboard the ship USS Iwo Jimatreating foreign policy as a reality show bloody.
The looting of riches: oil under orders from Washington
Behind the smokescreen of memes and digital provocations, the central objective of the intervention reveals itself without disguise: the control of natural resources. After claiming that it placed the interim government of Delcy RodrĂguez under its direct supervision, the White House was emphatic in declaring that the decisions of the Venezuelan provisional authority are now “dictated” from Washington.
Meetings with executives from giants in the oil sector have already defined the “next steps” for the extraction and sale of Venezuelan oil. The image of Trump as “interim president” is the visual translation of a reality of direct foreign administration over the largest oil reserve in the world.
The threat extends to the region
The expansionist delirium and the mocking tone do not stop in Venezuela. Trump signaled that the next target is the Cuban Revolution, stating that the island “is ready to fall” after the total blockage of access to Venezuelan oil. In yet another moment of diplomatic disrespect, the president endorsed montages that suggest the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, as the future “president” of Cuba.
For analysts, Trump’s stance seeks to normalize military intervention and the breakdown of the democratic order as something trivial. By laughing at a nation whose sovereignty was violated and whose leaders were imprisoned, the US government reaffirms the cowardly face of a power that feels authorized to draw and redraw the political map of Latin America according to its own commercial interests and ideological whims.
