Ingredients
1 liter of milk
1 and 1/2 cups of sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Directions
- In a large saucepan, combine milk and sugar.
- Place the pan over medium-high heat and stir constantly until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to stir occasionally to prevent the milk from burning to the bottom of the pan.
- Cook the milk and sugar over low heat for about 2 to 3 hours, or until the liquid has reduced by half and is thick and creamy.
- If desired, add vanilla extract and mix well.
- Continue cooking the dulce de leche, stirring regularly, for another 30 minutes to 1 hour, or until it reaches the desired color and consistency.
- Remove the pan from the heat and let the dulce de leche cool completely.
- Transfer the dulce de leche to sterilized glass jars and cover tightly.
- Store in the refrigerator and consume within 2 to 3 weeks.
