After an internal crisis, the government of interim Prime Minister Garry Conille appointed a new cabinet of ministers
Haiti announced the formation of the cabinet of interim Prime Minister, Garry Conille, this Tuesday (June 11, 2024). The cabinet is released almost two weeks after the appointment of the new prime minister.
The new government stands out for the reduction in the number of ministers and the complete replacement of previous members. Conille will hold the position of Minister of the Interior.
Among those nominated is Dominique Dupuy, Haiti’s representative at UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). He will lead the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The country has been dealing with government instability since the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who left office on March 12 after internal pressure. The problem escalated on March 3, when armed gangs moved to free thousands of inmates from Haiti’s National Penitentiary. More than 3,500 escaped and 10 died.
Henry held the position for almost 3 years. During his term, the Haitian crisis worsened, with serious security problems. The former prime minister assumed the head of government shortly after the assassination of then president Jovenel Moïse, on July 7, 2021.
With Moïse’s death, the council of ministers – commanded by the prime minister – also began to act as head of state. It was only in April of this year that a presidential transition council was appointed. The organization appointed Conille prime minister, but has not yet indicated a date for the presidential elections. The last one was in 2016.
