The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a note this Tuesday (9) in solidarity with the Palestinian people after Israeli bombings that had left 13 dead earlier in the week. The number has now risen to 28, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza. In the document, the MRE reiterates Brazil’s commitment to international law, including humanitarian law, and the two-state solution, and calls for an end to the escalation of tension in the region.

After expressing consternation and offering condolences to the families of the victims, the note says that “Brazil regrets that in 2023, the year of the 30th anniversary of the Oslo Peace Accords, the deaths of more than 100 Palestinians and more than 15 Israelis have already been recorded. in conflict. By reiterating that there is no justification for resorting to violence, especially against civilians, the Brazilian government appeals to the parties to refrain from actions that lead to an escalation of tension”.

Finally, the note says that “Brazil reiterates its commitment to international law, international humanitarian law and the two-state solution, so that Palestine and Israel can live together in peace and security, within mutually agreed borders and internationally recognized. It also reaffirms that the mere management of the conflict does not constitute a viable alternative for dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian issue, with the urgent need to resume peace negotiations”.

Israeli violence has already led to the death of 25 Palestinians, including children, in addition to having injured 76 since Tuesday (9). The attacks would target the Islamic Jihad movement, considered a “terrorist” by Israel and allies, including the United States. Until this Wednesday (10), there was no information on victims in Israel.

The escalation of violence is being considered the worst since August 2022. Egypt is trying to negotiate a ceasefire.

The Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip has 2.3 million inhabitants. In 2007, it came to be commanded by the Islamic movement Hamas and lives under Israeli blockade. Since 2008, several conflicts have occurred in the region, which suffers from poverty and lack of basic structures.
