The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the postponement of the 2025 Oscar nominations until January 23. The decision was taken due to the massive fires that devastated the Los Angeles region, in the United States, and forced the evacuation of more than 30,000 people, including celebrities such as Ben Affleck and James Woods.
This is the second postponement of the release, which would initially be on January 17th. Despite this, the Oscar ceremony remains scheduled for March 2. The voting period for nominees, in turn, will end on February 14, according to a statement sent by email to the Academy’s more than 10,000 members.
The fires, intensified by high winds, not only caused destruction and displacement but also altered the film industry’s calendar of events. The Critics Choice Awards were postponed, as were the film releases The Last Showgirl, Werewolf e Better Man – The Robbie Williams Story. The American Film Institute awards dinner was also cancelled.
Brazilian expectations
The change in the nomination date did not reduce anxiety among Brazilians. The film I’m Still Heredirected by Walter Salles, is one of the country’s biggest bets in years for the Best International Film category. Furthermore, Fernanda Torres’ victory at the Golden Globes, last Sunday (5), for her performance as the film’s protagonist, raised hopes of a possible nomination in the Best Actress category.
The scenario generates optimism for Brazil, which has not competed in the international category since Central Brazil (1999). The proximity to the announcement keeps alive the expectation that the country can shine again in the biggest world cinema award.
