In a movement that has generated broad indignation and charges of betrayal, licensed federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) was on Wednesday (16) at the White House in Washington, where he articulated new sanctions from the United States against Brazil. The visit was accompanied by Paulo Figueiredo-grandson of former dictator João Figueiredo and defendant for attempted coup.

The trip took place a few days after former President Donald Trump announced 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, in a hostile gesture to the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the Supreme Court (STF), who judges former President Jair Bolsonaro for an attempted coup.

“Everything is in the hands of Trump”
Upon leaving the White House, Eduardo told TV Globo reporter Raquel Krähenbühl, which “most likely Trump will also tighten other levers” against Brazil. He cited measures such as freezing goods, cancellation of visas and restrictions on the global financial system.

“If you look at what the US has done with Russia … There are several measures. Everything is now in the hands of Trump,” said Eduardo, who openly celebrated the tariffs imposed on Brazil.

Blackmail for the amnesty of scammers
In a video recorded alongside Paulo Figueiredo, the deputy stated that a possible retreat in tariffs depends on the approval of the amnesty to those involved in the attacks of January 8, 2023.

“Amnesty passing in Congress is an important first step. It puts Brazil in a good position to do these negotiations,” said Eduardo.

Figueiredo was even more emphatic: “There is no hypothesis for the US to remove sanctions, unless Brazil will take the first step. And it didn’t stop there. It’s just the beginning of a journey that can be dark to Brazil.”

Paulo Figueiredo revealed that during the meeting with US diplomats Eduardo and he made a video call with Jair Bolsonaro. The group would have tried to convince Americans to replace tariffs with personal sanctions – to no avail. “Trump is dealing with it personally,” said Figueiredo.

Government reaction: “antipatriotic act”
The Brazilian government’s response was immediate. Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, classified Eduardo’s attitude as “antipatriotic” and said he could be sued for collective moral damages, if his direct involvement with the sanctions is proven.

“He went to live in the US to work against Brazilians. Any penny more paid by companies, any job lost, has to be charged him. And we will charge,” Messiah told CNN Brazil.

According to the minister, Eduardo conspires to rid his father from jail and ignores the damage that his actions can cause to the national economy: “It is more concerned with family problems than with the Brazilian people.”

Request for suspension of the mandate
Deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ), PT leader in the House, filed a request from Eduardo’s office to suspend Eduardo’s term for breach of parliamentary decorum and threat to national sovereignty.

“He is promoting sanctions against Brazil, with direct impact on workers’ jobs and attacking the Supreme Court. This is homeland betrayal,” said Lindbergh, who also charges investigation into the use of diplomatic passport and funding from his US stay alleged by Jair Bolsonaro via donations.

Investigated by the Supreme Court
Eduardo Bolsonaro is already the target of an inquiry in the Federal Supreme Court, opened at the request of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), for allegedly acting for the US to sanction Ministers of the STF, members of PGR and the Federal Police.

According to Attorney General Paulo Gonet, Eduardo adopts “Intimidatory Tom” to interfere with his father’s judgment. He is investigated for coercion in the course of the process and research obstruction.

The posture of the deputy – elected by popular vote – to support sanctions against the national economy and blackmail the congress with the amnesty agenda has been widely criticized by jurists, parliamentarians and leaders of civil society, who see a serious violation of democratic and constitutional principles.
