Died on Tuesday (21) the first left president of El Salvador (2009-2014), Mauricio Funes, at 65 years. Funes died in Nicaraguá as a political exile after being charged with corruption in his home country.

“Unfortunately, the citizen patient Carlos Mauricio Funes Cartagena, former president of El Salvador, (…) died,” the Ministry of Health of Nicaragua said in a statement published in the official environment.

Funes, which came to power through a coalition led by the Foreland Martí of National Liberation (FMLN), died at 9:35 pm, local time (0h35 in Brasilia), “due to a serious chronic disease,” said the official statement.

A journalist by profession and incisive interviewer in a television news program, Funes ran in the March 2009 elections and ended 20 years of the right -wing Republican Alliance Government (Arena).

During his government, he promoted social programs and, on behalf of the Salvadoran State, asked for forgiveness for the army victims during the Bloody Civil War (1980-1992), which left more than 75,000 dead.

In a statement issued on social networks, FMLN pointed out that FUNES, both as an investigative journalist and as president of El Salvador, had wide acceptance among citizens and the international community.

FMLN also admitted that while questioning the performance of some of its allies in the cabinet, it will remember Funes as the president of the change, with a legacy that will last despite its detractors.
