Even after Israel’s announcement of “tactical breaks” in the fighting between 10am and 8pm to allow humanitarian aid to enter in Gaza, at least 62 Palestinians were killed by Israeli attacks on Sunday, according to local medical authorities. Among the victims, 34 were people who sought humanitarian aid.
The areas supposedly included in the pause-Al-Mawasi, Deir El-Balah and Gaza City-remain the target of offensive. The Enclave Ministry of Health also confirmed six new deaths from malnutrition, aggravating the humanitarian collapse.
Hunger as a weapon of war
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the nutritional situation in Gaza is in a “dangerous trajectory”. Almost one in five children under five in the city of Gaza suffers from acute malnutrition. According to the UN agency, the deaths caused by hunger are “totally avoidable” and derive from deliberate blockages at the entry of food, water, fuel and medicines.
“The deliberate block and delay of large -scale humanitarian aid have cost many lives,” said WHO, reiterating that the only viable response is the urgent and continuous increase in land supply sending.
Aerial aid: dangerous, inefficient and insufficient
The strategy of launching air packages by air, adopted by countries such as Jordan and United Arab Emirates, was harshly criticized by humanitarian organizations. Reports point out that several civilians were injured by trying to access the pallets, which fall disorderly in travel areas, generating riots.
“Gaza has become a test laboratory. Each failed attempt to feed the population only serves to divert the focus of Israel’s responsibility for hunger,” a Nutrition Cluster spokesman said.
Israeli military personnel continue advancing
Despite the advertised breaks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said military operations continue: “We are advancing in the fight. Whatever the way, we will be forced to allow essential help, but we will continue to destroy Hamas.”
Since October 2023, the Israeli offensive has killed more than 59,800 people and left nearly 145,000 injured in Gaza, according to local Ministry of Health. At the same time, 133 Palestinians died for malnutrition, including 87 children.
NGOs and diplomats denounce humanitarian manipulation
The Israeli Organization Gisha, defender of the freedom of movement of Palestinians, said that humanitarian breaks represent a “minimum increase” of assistance and are far from responding to the catastrophe.
Unrwa chief Philippe Lazzarini also denounced a uninformation campaign of the Israeli government to discredit UN organizations and try to take control of help.
“There is no evidence of misappropriation of Hamas. The accusations aim only to sabotage the reputation of the humanitarian community and justify a politically motivated scheme,” said Lazzarini.
Immediate ceasefire is the only viable way
United Kingdom Foreign Minister David Lammy stated that Israel’s announcements are “very late” and insufficient: “We need a ceasefire to end the war, allow hostage release and enable the entry of help without obstacles.”
Cindy McCain, director of the UN World Food Program, stressed the urgency: “We have enough teams and food. We need continuous access by land. The population of Gaza needs much more than foods played from heaven.”
Current situation in numbers:
- Killed in Gaza since October/2023: 59,821
- Wounded in Gaza: 144,851
- Hunger Deaths: 133 (87 children)
- Dead in Israel since 7/10/23: 1,139
- Captured hostages: +200
