With 75 votes in favor, 24 against and three abstentions, the Peruvian Congress removed right-wing president José Jerí this Tuesday (17), the third in a row to be removed from office.

Last October he replaced Dina Boularte, who also came to power after the fall of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo. She was removed due to her inability to continue governing.

A new president of Congress will be chosen this Wednesday (18), at 4 pm (Brasília time), and must hold the position, on an interim basis, until July 28. For the first time, the country will be without a head of state for more than 24 hours. General elections are scheduled for April 12.

According to Reuters, in the last 8 years, the Andean country has had 8 presidents. The ousted president was facing the scandal, dubbed “Chifagate,” after a local name for Chinese restaurants.

In January, Jeri was filmed “arriving at a restaurant late at night, wearing a hood, to meet with Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang, who owns stores and a concession for an energy project. The meeting was not publicly disclosed.”
