China has increased its trade with South American countries 40 times between 2000 and 2023. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the country’s transactions currently move US $ 322.9 billion.

The fund says trade combined with China has surpassed the United States in 2015.

“In 2023, trade with China surpassed the United States by more than 50%, with six of the 12 countries negotiating more with Chinese than with Americans,” reveals a report of the value based on fund data.

“Brazil, the largest economy in the region, increased its trade with China 68 times between 2000 and 2023, recording a commercial surplus of approximately US $ 50 billion.”

In addition to the various investments made by Chinese companies in the region, the report points out that the new US administration also launches uncertainties about Central and South America.

President Donald Trump has promised to resume control of the Panama Canal and does not rule out the use of military or economic strength for it.

“The reduction in US grain exports to China during Trump’s first term led Brazil and other South American countries to fill the gap. Argentina is already increasing exports of wheat and corn to China, ”says the text.

Among the investments are the highlight of Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology, also known as Spacesail, which signed an agreement to launch satellite telecommunications services in Brazil as early as 2026.

The Chinese company Huawei Technologies has data centers in Chile, Peru and Brazil, with plans to build a room in the latter to meet the growing demand linked to artificial intelligence.

“Chinese players are also making raids in the manufacturing sector of South America. The BYD electric vehicle manufacturer almost quadrupled the volume of sales in Brazil last year.”

Also noteworthy is the inauguration of the port of Chancay, in Peru. The first cargo ship that came out of that port attracted in Shanghai after a 23 -day trip through the Pacific Ocean last month.
