China has built over 30,000 smart factories as part of its industrial modernization strategy, the Ministry of Industry and Computerization (MII) said. The advance is part of a wider plan of manufacturing digitization, which also resulted in the creation of 1,200 advanced level factories and 230 of excellence.

The initiative seeks to reduce costs, increase production efficiency, and improve quality control. According to MII, intelligent factories record product development cycles 28.4% shorter, 22.3% higher productive efficiency and 50.2% less product defects. In addition, carbon emissions were reduced by 20.4%, indicating a sustainability effort in the sector.

Factory digitization is part of a technological maturity classification system, in which the Chinese government provides for the expansion of units to an excellence level and, in the future, to the pioneering stage in digital industrialization. Smart factories are already operating in all 31 provinces in the country, covering more than 80% of manufacturing sectors.

International AI and Cooperation

Chinese technological advancement was the subject of the summit for action in artificial intelligence, held in Paris, on February 10 and 11, where the country reaffirmed its commitment to AI’s inclusive and sustainable development. Representing President XI Jinping, Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Guoqing pointed out that China is willing to work with other nations to boost innovation and safety in the area.

The Chinese government has actively participated in AI global governance. In October 2023, Xi Jinping presented the Global AI governance initiative, which proposes guidelines for the ethical and safe development of technology. At the summit, Zhang Guoqing stressed that China defends international cooperation to avoid technological inequalities and ensure that AI benefits all humanity.

In addition, Beijing invited foreign companies and governments to the Global AI Developer Conference (GAIDC), scheduled to take place in Shanghai, between 21 and 23 February, consolidating China as one of the main research and innovation centers in the sector .

China-France and Technological Expansion Relations

The Chinese presence at the Paris summit also had an impact on diplomacy. French President Emmanuel Macron received Zhang Guoqing and reaffirmed the importance of strategic cooperation with Beijing. Macron pointed out that France defends its technological and industrial autonomy, but recognizes the need for dialogue with China to advance artificial intelligence and digitization of manufacturing. China, in turn, seeks to consolidate its leadership in the digital industrial revolution, integrating Intelligent factories and artificial intelligence to their production processes. With the expansion of international partnerships, the country positions itself as a central actor in the global transition to a high technology economy.
