The President of China, Xi Jinping, and the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, announced, this Tuesday (21), new plans to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries. The statement was made one day after Donald Trump assumed his second term as president of the United States, marking a time of renewed tensions in international politics.
The conversation between the two leaders took place via videoconference and was publicized through official media in both China and Russia. During the meeting, Xi reaffirmed the importance of taking the bilateral relationship to a more advanced level, highlighting the need to face external uncertainties and promote stability on the international stage.
“Both sides should continue to deepen strategic coordination, resolutely support each other and safeguard the legitimate interests of both countries,” Xi said, according to CCTV.
Putin highlighted the depth and resilience of ties between Moscow and Beijing, stating that the partnership is not subject to internal political or situational variables. The alliance, consolidated over the last decade, has strengthened especially since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when both governments began to intensify commercial and military cooperation.
“The joint work of Russia and China plays an important stabilizing role in international affairs,” Putin said during the call, according to the state news agency “Ria Novosti”.
The initiative comes at a time of attacks on United States foreign policy. Trump, on his first day in office, signed executive orders that include the country’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization.
Although he postponed more aggressive measures against China, such as trade tariffs, the Republican reiterated criticism of the Kremlin and the conduct of the war in Ukraine.
Xi and Putin defended the strengthening of an international system centered on the UN and reiterated their commitment to a multipolar global order. In an official statement, the Chinese leadership highlighted that strategic coordination between the two countries plays a stabilizing role in global affairs.
For analysts, the Sino-Russian rapprochement represents a significant challenge to the hegemony of the United States and its Western allies. In addition to its impact on the global balance of power, the alliance has direct implications for Eurasian security and international trade.
Trump’s stance towards Moscow and Beijing will be decisive in shaping the future of international relations in the coming years. Meanwhile, the partnership between Russia and China must continue to advance as a response to Western pressure and a central pillar in promoting a multipolar world.
