Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira announced on Tuesday (29), in a speech in the United Nations, that Brazil decided to immediately suspend exports of military equipment to Israel, in response to the son-in-law climbing against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The measure integrates a set of Brazilian actions against the systematic violations of human rights practiced by the Israeli government.
In his intervention at the UN Conference, Vieira stated that “Brazil will not tolerate impunity”, denouncing the “intolerable daily human rights violations” that occur in Palestine.
The minister described the situation in Gaza as a scenario “where the essence of humanity is being buried”, emphasizing the impact of shocking images of hungry children and civilians killed while awaiting food distribution.
In addition to the military embargo, the Brazilian government decided to formally join the process filed by South Africa against Israel by genocide at the International Court of Justice (CIJ) in The Hague.
The chancellor also announced a blockade of Brazilian imports from products from Palestinian territories illegally occupied by Israel, a measure accompanied by rigorous inspection to ensure that national trade does not contribute to Israeli violations.
Brazil will also support an international UN mission to investigate Apartheid’s complaints practiced by Israel, while guaranteeing technical support to the Palestinian authority to build a sovereign and viable state.
In addition, it will assume the presidency of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Palestine Refugees Assistance (Unrwa), reinforcing its diplomatic protagonism in the conflict.
The sanctions announced by Vieira are the continuity of previous measures taken by the Lula administration in the face of the aggravation of Israeli policies under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu.
By August 2024, the Ministry of Defense had already suspended the purchase of 36 Israeli armored armored, highlighting a growing diplomatic removal.
Since then, Brazil has been without accepting the appointment of a new Israeli ambassador in the country after an episode in which Tel Aviv tried to publicly embarrass the Brazilian representative.
The movement demonstrates a clear hardening of the Lula government’s position against Netanyahu government practices.
By assuming a prominent role in the defense of international law and the solution of two states, Brazil strengthens its global dialogue, aligned with countries such as France, Canada and the United Kingdom, which recently announced formal recognition of the Palestinian state.
In Vieira’s words, “there is no peace without justice, and there is no justice without liability. The suffering of the Palestinian people can no longer be ignored,” said the chancellor, reinforcing the Brazilian commitment to international justice and the end of Israeli impunity.
