Ingredients
4 tablespoons of butter
4 tablespoons of wheat flour
4 cups of milk
Salt to taste
Nutmeg to taste (optional)
Directions
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- When the butter is completely melted, add the wheat flour. Stir continuously with a whisk (wire whisk) to avoid the formation of lumps.
- Cook the butter and flour mixture for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly. This will help eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Gradually add the milk to the mixture, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue stirring until the mixture is well incorporated and begins to thicken.
- Cook the sauce over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the desired consistency. The béchamel should coat the back of a wooden spoon.
- Season with salt to taste and, if desired, add a pinch of nutmeg to enhance the flavor. Stir well to incorporate the seasonings.
- Remove the pan from the heat and use the béchamel sauce as needed in your recipe.
