Former President Barack Obama joined his wife Michelle Obama on Tuesday (20) on the second day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Illinois, to express his support for Kamala Harris’ candidacy for president of the United States. Obama passed on to the country’s first black candidate the motto that guided his campaign for the White House 16 years ago: “Yes, she can.”

The former president presented Harris as a candidate who can “unite America” and “fight for the interests of the people,” in contrast to former president and Republican White House candidate Trump. “As president, she will not only serve her constituents […] She will work on behalf of all Americans,” he said.

In aligned speeches, he and Michelle used their influence and charisma as party stars to exalt Kamala and undermine the image of Donald Trump, the Republican Party candidate. Just like the current President of the United States, Joe Biden, Obama established a class difference in the political proposal of the last Democratic governments, and of a possible Kamala administration, with Trump’s way of governing.

“The truth is that Donald Trump sees power as nothing more than a means to his personal ends. He wants the middle class to pay the price with another massive tax cut that would mostly help him and his wealthy friends,” he said.

“We need to build more homes and eliminate some of the outdated laws and regulations that have made it difficult to build housing for workers in this country. That’s a top priority. And she’s laid out a bold new plan to do just that,” Obama said, citing Kamala’s proposal to build 3 million homes over the next four years.

Obama took the opportunity to recall his government plan in relation to the health sector.

“When it comes to health care, we should all be proud of the enormous progress we have made through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), providing millions of people with access to affordable coverage while protecting millions more from unscrupulous abuse.

As President Trump, he claimed that the program was too costly and compromised the sustainability of health plans, and he even instituted measures that made the program more flexible. In 2017, under the Republican administration, Congress repealed part of the law, which dealt with penalties for those who did not sign up for a health plan.

Obama was his usual sharp orator as he handed the baton to Kamala. “We don’t need four more years of bluster, bungling and chaos. We’ve seen this movie before and we all know the sequel is worse. America is ready for a better story. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris.”

One of the protagonists, former First Lady Michelle Obama, stated in a speech that “there is something magical in the air”, citing the “contagious power of hope”, and that this hope “is returning” to the country.

“Hope is returning. America has a chance to overcome the demons of fear, division and hate that have consumed us and continue to pursue the unfulfilled promise of this great nation, the dream our parents and grandparents fought, died and sacrificed for,” Michelle said.

The former American first lady was responsible for the most sarcastic provocation of the night, referring to jobs for black people, which Trump falsely insists are usurped by immigrants crossing the borders illegally.

“Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently looking for might be one of those ‘black jobs’?”
