The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) announced its support for the Anti -Fascist and Anti -Racist March convened by the LGTBIQ+ Collective for this Saturday, 1st. February. The union is added to the two CTAS (Argentine Workers Confederation) and the social movements that had already declared adherence to mobilization, which promises to be one of the biggest demonstrations since the start of the Ultracereita government of Javier Milei. The march is scheduled for 4pm, leaving Congress and going to the May Square, repudiating the speech and the government’s anti-right policies.
CGT returns to the streets against Milei
The adhesion of centrals to march marks the return of the union to mobilizations organicly, after months of absence in the streets. CGT Human Rights Secretary and UEJN Judicial Union leader Maia Volcovinsky said that support is a response to Milei’s policies, which, according to her, “constantly surpasses the limits in terms of human rights and their speech against the sexual minorities ”.
The Secretary General of the CTA of Workers and National Deputy, Hugo Yasky, also highlighted the importance of union adherence. “I find it healthy the answer society is making to the president’s statements. This speaks well of our people. Milei tries to build a new internal enemy every day and is digging her own pit, ”he said.
Milei’s controversial statements drive mobilization
Mobilization’s trigger was Milei’s recent statements at the Davos Economic Forum, where the president classified the LGTBIQ+ collective as “pedophiles”. The words caused a strong rejection of various social and political sectors, leading to an organized response of civil society. This was filed a third request for impeachment in Congress.
Faced with growing repudiation, the government tried to alleviate the impact of the statements. Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said Milei did not attack feminism or minority rights, but “denounced a business behind these causes.” According to him, “the president strictly defends the choice of every human being.”
On social networks, Milei reaffirmed his position by publishing an infographic entitled “The Cannhoto Dictionary”, where he suggests that his criticism is distorted by political opponents.
Human rights and historical memory also on the agenda
In addition to the defense of sexual minorities, the centrals also included in their claims agenda the protection of memory spaces, which have been emptied by the Milei Administration. CGT Vice-Secretary Héctor Daer emphasized: “The struggle for human rights is not over, nor can it be forgotten.”
CGT’s decision to join the march was consolidated after a meeting with representatives of Mothers of Praça de May and other human rights organizations. Daer pointed out that Milei’s policies represent “a social regression” and reaffirmed the presence of workers in the demonstration.
Perspectives and next steps
This Saturday’s antifascist and anti -racist march promises to be a milestone in popular opposition to the Milei government. The massive presence of social movements, unions and human rights groups indicates a strengthening of resistance to the reactionary policies of the president.
Unionists, in addition to their participation in march, also articulate actions in Congress to block the labor reforms proposed by the government. According to Daer, “if I Malei continues his free price strategy and frozen salaries, he will be fostering a great social conflict.”
This Saturday’s act will be a strength test between the organized social sectors and Milei’s management, which faces increasing internal and international pressure for their controversial statements and government measures.
