The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico (Smer, left-wing party), injured in a shooting attack, underwent a new surgery this Friday (May 17, 2024) to remove dead tissue. Banská Bystrica Hospital reported that he is conscious, but remains hospitalized in serious condition.
“I think it will be a few more days before we know definitively how [o estado de saúde] will develop in the future”Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliniak told journalists.
Attacked by 4 shots, the prime minister was hit in the abdomen and arm, according to the TV station TA3. He had already undergone surgery on Wednesday (May 15), shortly after the episode.
ATTACK AGAINST PREMIÊ
The 59-year-old prime minister was seriously injured. The incident took place after a government meeting in the city of Handlová, about 190 km from the capital Bratislava.
A 71-year-old man suspected of being the shooter was arrested by authorities, who did not reveal his identity to the public. According to local media, he was not part of any opposition group, but the attack was politically motivated.
Images released on X (formerly Twitter) show the Slovak prime minister being carried to a car after being shot.
