According to the “NYT”, arrests involving pro-Palestinian students have been recorded since April 18
At least 1,900 protesters have been arrested on university campuses across the United States since April 18. According to information from the New York Times until 1:30 pm (Brasília time) this Thursday (May 2, 2024), police officers worked in 42 higher education institutions where students carried out pro-Palestinian acts.
Arrests were recorded at universities such as Yale, Dartmouth College, Princeton and Columbia, which are part of the Ivy League (group of the best universities in the USA).
The arrests took place after authorities were authorized by university administrations to disperse the protests and dismantle the camps. In several cases, there was conflict between students and the police.
In the early hours of this Thursday (May 2), police in riot gear began to dismantle a camp at UCLA (acronym in English for University of California at Los Angeles) after the educational institution declared the practice illegal.
Images recorded at the scene and published on social media profiles show agents removing objects such as cones and metal barriers while protesters tried to prevent the action from progressing. According to the New York Timesat least 132 people were arrested at the scene.

The demonstrations organized by students against the war in the Gaza Strip were promoted by Columbia University in New York. Protesters call for an end to the war in the Gaza Strip. They also demand that universities separate themselves financially and academically from institutions and companies linked to the Israeli government.
Pro-Palestinian students began setting up the camp on April 17, the same day that the institution’s president, Minouche Shafik, testified before the U.S. House Committee on Education and Labor and spoke about the steps the university is taking regarding accusations of anti-Semitism on campus.
On Tuesday night (April 30), authorities detained at least 109 people after entering Hamilton Hall, a building in Columbia that had been occupied by protesters. Previously, on April 18, police had already arrested 108 students at the institution.
