Representatives of Javier Milei are trying to mitigate the attacks made by the Argentine president against the Brazilian authorities. Attempts to reduce impacts occur amid the reaction of the Lula government, which summoned its ambassador in Argentina back to Brasília (DF) and demanded clarifications from the representative of the neighboring country.
The Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pablo Quirno Magrane, said that the episode was just one more in a “series that has been occurring between Brazil and Argentina due to political and ideological differences that President Milei has with President Lula”. “The president [Milei] participated in a partisan event. Evidently, he supports the Bolsonaro family in Brazil,” he said.
At the same time as he softened the offenses made by his boss, the minister criticized Lula’s reaction. “Argentina does not and has not raised this issue to the institutional level. We separate what is political and ideological from the institutional. We have had episodes like this that we have not responded to. In other words, we are not responding and will not respond.” In his speech, made on a podcast, he also repeated the accusation that there was Brazilian interference in his country’s elections.
A spokesperson for Milei also sought, in a public statement, to separate the president’s actions from institutionality. “There have always been insults on both sides. I believe they are ideological, political differences, but, at least, Argentina has never taken these differences to the diplomatic level. But we do not believe that this will have an impact on the diplomatic part of both countries, at least on Argentina’s side. It is not the intention that this will affect commercial relations between two brotherly peoples who trade and who, in fact, have each other as their main trading partners, as shown by the numbers, Mercosur and the history of both.”
Brazilian government reaction
The Brazilian government does not intend to escalate the conflict further. Criticisms not conservative camp
Right-wing candidates for the 2026 elections also disapproved of Javier Milei’s participation in the Liberal Party (PL) convention, at which the candidacy of current senator Flávio Bolsonaro for the presidency was launched.
“There’s that inelegant conversation at a convention that proposes to be for a candidate, with all that lowliness. Where you expect government plans”, criticized Ronaldo Caiado, who will run for the position of president for the PSD.
Gilberto Kassab, vice-presidential candidate on the same ticket and president of the party, also spoke negatively about Flávio Bolsonaro’s strategy, taking the opportunity to poke at the current government. “I expected the presentation of a candidate with proposals. He brings a president from another country, who has important relations with Brazil, to have a debate with the current government, which also falls into the trap and lowers the level”, he said.
