In an editorial, the Spanish newspaper says that the Argentine president’s statements in Brazil reflect “deliberate deterioration” of diplomacy
The Spanish newspaper The Country published this Wednesday (29.Jul.2026) an editorial criticizing the statements made by the president of Argentina, Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza, right), during the Liberal Party convention last Saturday (25.Jul), in São Paulo. The event in the capital of São Paulo officialized the candidacy of senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) for the Presidency.
no text “Insults against diplomacy”the newspaper says that Milei was irresponsible in calling President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) “corrupt”, “socialist rubbish” e “prisoner”. He states that the Argentine’s speech “represents more than just another episode of conflict between 2 leaders who never hid their ideological and personal differences”.
The editorial says that the Argentine president’s statements about Lula “may draw applause from his supporters, but they reflect a deliberate deterioration in international relations and an aberrant vision of diplomacy on the part of Milei, in which internal political calculation, gratuitous provocation and flagrant irresponsibility override respect between governments and good neighborliness.”.
According to the Spanish newspaper, “Democratic politics allows disagreement, what it cannot normalize is the replacement of diplomacy with insults.”. The publication states that Milei is transforming statements into a foreign policy instrument and that, in doing so, he is degrading the public debate and weakening the institutions that support coexistence between countries.
“He [Milei] He did this 2 years ago, when he visited Spain to insult the Prime Minister, and now he repeats the same during his visit to Brazil. Both countries and their leaders may disagree about economic models, international alliances or political priorities, but there is a fundamental difference between defending ideas and turning verbal aggression into a method of government, both within and outside their borders. The 1st strengthens democracy; the 2nd weakens it and, in the long term, puts it at risk”says the editorial.
O The Country declares that this phenomenon is not exclusive to Argentina or Latin America, but that it extends across a large part of the world, ranging from Europe to the United States of Donald Trump (Republican Party).
The newspaper praises Lula’s stance when commenting “Who is this guy?” when asked about Milei’s statements. “He [Lula] I was right not to give in to provocations and to try to resolve the issue through diplomatic channels.”says the editorial.
“Democracies do not become stronger by raising the tone of confrontation, and diplomacy exists precisely to prevent today’s words from becoming tomorrow’s conflicts”the text reads.
