Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum launched an operation, this Friday (26), to send more humanitarian aid to Venezuela in order to help rescue victims of the devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 that hit the South American country on Wednesday (24), leaving more than 589 people dead.

During her press conference this Friday morning, the Mexican president detailed that the detachment includes specialized personnel, medical resources and equipment. Sheinbaum explained that the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) mobilized 250 emergency response specialists and 18 canine units trained to locate people under collapsed structures.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) joined this contingent to strengthen diplomatic coordination.

The Mexican head of state informed that the federal government maintains constant communication to assess the situation and ensure continuity of assistance. She also detailed that she scheduled a phone call for this Friday with the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, to discuss sending additional resources. “Today, after the morning press conference, I have a call with the interim president of Venezuela to see what else they need and what support we can provide,” Sheinbaum said.

The international cooperation mission began its work in Venezuelan territory in the early hours of Friday. Mexican aid arrived in three aircraft equipped with medical supplies, tools and specialized equipment.

The brigades are operating in the area designated by the Venezuelan authorities to mitigate the consequences of this emergency and rescue survivors. The Mexican contingent is trained in urban search and rescue, medical care and technical assistance. Canine units are crucial because of their ability to locate trapped people.
