The Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) released a note of solidarity with the Venezuelan people after the earthquakes that hit the country on Wednesday (24) and left at least 164 dead and almost a thousand injured, according to local authorities.

In the statement, the movement states that it is following the situation with “deep solidarity” and provides support to the families of the victims, the affected communities and the rescue teams working in the affected areas.

“In this moment of pain, we express our support to the families of the victims, the cities, neighborhoods and communities affected, the workers facing the consequences of this disaster, as well as the teams working to save lives”, says the note.

The movement, which has deep ties with Venezuela, also reaffirmed its internationalist principle, based on active solidarity.

“The MST reaffirms its internationalist commitment and sends its solidarity embrace to all the Venezuelan people”, reinforced the movement.

Militants from the Apolônio de Carvalho Brigade reported that they are safe. Members reported moments of strong shaking and structural difficulties in the first hours after the earthquakes. According to the brigade, activists and students from the Latin American School of Medicine (Elam) left the buildings at the time of the tremors.

“Everything was very fast and very strong. In Caracas there were several points of collapse. We don’t know how to measure the level of people affected. But there is information that hospitals are collapsed. Some points without electricity and the internet is limited”, says the message shared to supporters.

The Apolônio de Carvalho Brigade brings together MST activists who work in Venezuela on agroecology, food sovereignty, seed production and political training projects, as well as medical student exchanges. The initiative began in 2006, based on collaborations between the movement and the Venezuelan government.
