China countered this Tuesday (26) the promise of President-elect of the United States Donald Trump to apply a drastic increase in import duties on products from the Asian country.
According to the businessman, products from China will be taxed at 10%, in addition to existing taxes.
China, through an embassy spokeswoman, said China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial and that “no one will win a trade war or a tariff war,” Liu Pengyu said.
In posts on his Truth social network on Monday, Trump stated that China had not fulfilled its promises to institute the death penalty for fentanyl traffickers, writing that “drugs are entering our country, mainly through Mexico, at levels never before seen before.”
“Until they stop, we will charge China an additional 10% tariff, above and beyond any additional tariff, on all of their many products entering the United States of America,” Trump said.
The country claims that China has taken measures to combat drug trafficking following an agreement reached last year between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. “The Chinese side has notified the American side about the progress made in US-related law enforcement operations against narcotics,” Liu said.
